Sharks Cruise Past Albany State in Doubleheader Sweep

NSU will return to SSC play this weekend

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Returning back to the AD Griffin Sports Complex for the first time since Feb. 21, the Nova Southeastern softball team picked up two wins over the visiting Golden Rams of Albany State on Tuesday evening. Down 4-3 in the fifth of the first game, the Sharks rallied to steal an 8-3 victory before topping ASU, 8-2, in the nightcap.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
BOTTOM 2ND: After back-to-back walks drawn by Keeley Mayers and Daniela Bautista, an error committed by ASU's second baseman on Megan Maloney's hit allowed Mayers to score from second for the 1-0 NSU lead.
 
TOP 3RD: With two outs on the board, an RBI-single by Albany State's Lavette Tucker knotted the game, 1-1.
 
BOTTOM 3RD: Kailynn Blackwood led the inning off with her second walk of the day, and after stealing second, she put the Sharks in scoring position. Two batters later, Lexie Storrer used an RBI-single to score Blackwood and give NSU a 2-1 advantage.
 
TOP 4TH: A lead-off solo homer by Tucker tied the game once again, 2-2.
 
TOP 5TH: The Golden Rams took their lone lead of the game, 3-2, in the fifth inning, as Tucker sent a stand-up triple to right field so tally her third RBI of the night.
 
BOTTOM 5TH: A Blackwood singled down the left field line and an Edmundson walk put NSU in scoring position, before a fielder's choice made on Dominique Sprengers' hit wasn't in time and Blackwood crossed the plate to tie the game, 3-3. A double steal by Edmundson and Sprengers put runners at second and third and the next batter, Storrer, tallied her second RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly to center to push NSU ahead, 4-3.
 
BOTTOM 6TH: The Sharks exploded for four runs in the bottom of the sixth, giving themselves a comfortable 8-3 lead. A fielder's choice allowed Lageyre to reach and also scored Mayers, and a batter later, a wild pitch allowed Bautista to cross to give NSU a 6-3 edge. After an RBI-single by Edmundson scored Lageyre, Sprengers singled down the left field line to score Edmundson an account for NSU's final tally.  
 
 
INSIDE THE STATS:
  • Blackwood went 1-for-2 with her two walks, scoring twice, while Sprengers was 1-for-4 with two RBI.
  • Storrer also tallied two RBI, finishing 1-for-3 at the plate, while Edmundson went 1-for-3, scoring twice with one RBI.
  • Mayers had two runs scored while Bautista and Lagyere each crossed the plate once, with Lageyre tallying one RBI.
  • Storrer increased her record to 7-10 after tossing all 7.0 innings and allowing three runs on six hits with two strikeouts.
 
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
  • The Sharks outhit the Warriors 6-5.
  • The Golden Rams' starting pitcher Aryn McGowan delivered seven walks, tying the Sharks' season high.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
BOTTOM 1ST: NSU wasted no time getting on the board, as RBI-singles by Edmundson and Sprengers gave the Sharks a 2-0 advantage.
 
BOTTOM 2ND: Mayers led the inning off with a triple down the right field line before the next batter, Bautista, brought her home on a ground out to second, pushing NSU ahead, 3-0.
 
BOTTOM 3RD: With one out on the board, Edmundson tripled to left before Sprengers sent a sacrifice fly to center to score her for a 4-0 NSU edge.
 
TOP 5TH: With runners on first and second, a bunt by ASU's Williams advanced the runners before an error committed by the Sharks allowed one to score, putting the Golden Rams on the board.
 
BOTTOM 5TH: Sending a double to left center to kick the inning off, Maloney was then pushed to third on a ground out by Lageyre before a Blackwood ground out brought her home to make it 5-1 in NSU's favor.
 
TOP 6TH: The Golden Rams recorded their final run of the night as Megan Shepherd singled to right field to score Brianna Murillo, cutting the Sharks' lead to three runs, 5-2.
 
BOTTOM 6TH: After reaching on a fielder's choice, a double to left by Mayers pushed pinch hitter Megan Granitto to third. Another fielder's choice on Bautista's at bat allowed Granitto to score before a Maloney triple brought home both Mayers and Bautista, accounting for NSU's final two runs and overall 8-2 victory.  
 
INSIDE THE STATS:
  • Edmundson was a perfect 3-for-3 in the nightcap, tallying one RBI and scoring twice. She also recorded two triples.
  • Mayers and Maloney were both 2-for-3, as Mayers scored twice and Maloney once. Maloney also tallied two RBI.
  • Bautista and Sprengers each collected RBI.
  • Sprengers moved to 5-2 on the season, pitching all 7.0 innings. On the night she allowed two runs on eight hits with five strikeouts.
 
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
  • The Sharks came into the game with six triples on the season and tallied four in this game alone.
  • There were six extra-base hits in the nightcap, as opposed to only single-base hits in the first game.
  • Sprenger's five strikeouts were a career-high as a Shark.

UP NEXT: 

The Sharks will return to Sunshine State Conference play this weekend, traveling to St. Leo, Fla. to face off against No. 8 Saint Leo. The three-game series is set to start Friday, Mar. 9 at 7:00 p.m.
